Failed Your ADI Part 2? Here’s Exactly What Happens Next-and How to Come Back Stronger
If you’ve failed the ADI Part 2 driving test twice, you need to be completely honest. Be honest with yourself and evaluate what preparation you need before your third and final try. If you fail Part 2 for a third time, you can’t try it again instantly. You must first resit and pass ADI Part 1. Additionally, you must wait two full years from your original Part 1 pass date before doing so. That’s your career as a driving instructor put on hold for at least two years. The stakes could not be higher.
This blog is written specifically for candidates in that position. It is aimed at PDIs in the Bexhill area of East Sussex. You have one try remaining and need to get it right.
Why Two Failures Isn’t Simply Bad Luck
Failing once can happen to any candidate. The ADI Part 2 is genuinely demanding-only around half of all candidates pass on their first try. But failing twice almost always points to something structural rather than circumstantial. It means there are faults in your driving that did not get properly addressed between attempts.
The most common pattern we see at Pro Coach is a candidate who failed their first test. They reviewed their examiner feedback and did some private practice. Then, they re-booked only to fail again for largely the same reasons. Private practice does not fix ingrained habits. If anything, driving more miles in your own car reinforces the very patterns that are causing the problem.
What the Examiner Is Actually Looking For
The ADI Part 2 standard is expert-level driving. That means:
- No more than six minor driving faults across a full hour- less than half what a learner is permitted
- Zero serious or dangerous faults-a single one ends the test as a fail
- Consistent mirror use before every change of speed or direction, every time, without exception
- Forward planning- anticipating junctions, roundabouts, and hazards and responding smoothly and early
- Correct signalling- neither missing a signal nor signalling unnecessarily
- Precise, confident manoeuvres with no hesitation and no corrections required
Most experienced drivers, drive well below the part 2 standard. The habits are automatic, which is exactly what makes them so difficult to find and correct without expert guidance.
What You Need to Do Differently Before Your Third Try
The worst thing you can do is re-book and repeat the same preparation.
If you want to succeed and become a driving instructor, work with a specialist ADI trainer. Do not rely on a regular driving instructor. Avoid just your own practice sessions. You need someone who understands what the Part 2 examiner is assessing. They must watch your driving with that critical lens. They will find faults you are not aware of, because you can’t see your own blind spots.
Be prepared to accept uncomfortable feedback. After two fails, some candidates are defensive about their driving. The training that will actually help you is honest, specific, and sometimes challenging. An expert trainer will tell you the truth-and that truth is what gets you through.
Focus on consistency, not performance. The Part 2 examiner is not looking for a single impressive hour of driving. They are looking for a standard that is reliable across the entire test. One clean section does not cancel out a cluster of minor faults elsewhere.
