Driving Instructor Training- The Reality
Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) can be a life-changing career. It offers flexible hours and independence. There’s a satisfaction in helping people achieve a vital skill.
But the truth is simple- it’s not easy.
It requires commitment, self‑discipline, and high‑quality training.
And most importantly:
You only get three attempts at ADI Part 2 and three attempts at Part 3.
There are no do‑overs after that.
Before you invest your time and money, it’s vital to understand the road ahead.
🛑 Why Many Trainees Don’t Make It
Every week, trainee forums are filled with posts like:
“Third and final attempt at Part 3…”
It happens far more often than people expect-and usually for the same reasons:
1. Not Fully Committed
Many people love the idea of being an instructor but don’t immerse themselves in the learning:
- Irregular study
- No mock theory tests
- Training materials unread
- Minimal self‑reflection
Success requires consistent effort, not just good intentions.
2. Lack of Honest Self‑Awareness
The strongest trainees are those who:
- Reflect on feedback
- Know their strengths and weaknesses
- Ask questions
- Learn proactively
Those who don’t reflect often repeat the same mistakes.
3. Misunderstanding the Trainer’s Role
A trainer supports and facilitates your learning- but you have to do the work.
There is no shortcut, and no one can “pour” the knowledge into you.
4. Not Everyone Is Suited to the Role
Large training companies often avoid difficult conversations. We don’t.
Some people simply aren’t the right fit, and that’s okay-but honesty early on saves money and frustration later.
5. Poor Training + Difficult Driving Habits
Even experienced drivers can find the ADI standard demanding, because it requires far greater precision than everyday driving. To successfully become a driving instructor, you must completely relearn long-standing habits. Focused, high-quality training is the only way to achieve this.
🚧 Understanding the Risk: Only Three Attempts
The ADI qualification process includes:
- Part 1 – Theory
- Part 2 – Driving Ability (3 attempts only)
- Part 3 – Instructional Ability (3 attempts only)
If you fail all three attempts at either Part 2 or Part 3, you must restart the entire process. This must be done from scratch after a waiting period.
This is why planning, structure and commitment matter so much.

But- we don’t just hand you over.
