Switching from Manual to Automatic? Here’s What Drivers in Bexhill Need to Know
You are in good company. You might have been Googling questions like “can I switch from manual to automatic with a full licence.” Many also search “do I need refresher lessons to drive an automatic” or “automatic driving lessons Bexhill.”
It’s a very common question at Pro Coach Driving School. The answer is more straightforward than most people expect.
The short version: You can legally drive an automatic car right now. This applies if you already hold a full manual UK driving licence. You have the legal right to use an automatic vehicle. You don’t need to take any extra test. You don’t need to retake your theory, and you don’t need to apply for a new licence. Your Category B manual licence already covers you for automatics. But “can I” and “should I just get straight in and drive” are two very different questions. That’s where we come in.
Why Are So Many Drivers Making the Switch Right Now?
Searches for automatic driving lessons have risen sharply across East Sussex and the UK. Interest in manual-to-automatic transitions has also increased significantly over the last couple of years. There are several clear reasons why:
- Electric and hybrid cars are almost exclusively automatic. With petrol and diesel new car sales ending by 2035, the road ahead is automatic. Many drivers in Bexhill are making the switch early.
- New cars in general are increasingly automatic. A growing number of people are finding their next car or company car has no clutch pedal. They want to feel prepared.
- It’s simply less stressful. Driving the A259 in summer traffic, navigating Bexhill town centre, or commuting into Hastings in a manual can be exhausting. Many experienced drivers are choosing comfort over control.
- Returning drivers. Someone who passed years ago in a manual might find getting back behind the wheel challenging. An automatic is often easier for them. It is a less overwhelming route back to confident driving.
Do I Need Refresher Lessons to Drive an Automatic if I Already Have a Manual Licence?
Legally, no. Practically, we’d strongly recommend it-and here’s why.
Automatic cars drive very differently in feel, even though the core road skills are the same. The brake response tends to be sharper. There’s no engine braking from changing down gears, which changes how you manage speed on downhill roads. Creep is the tendency of an automatic to inch ahead when you lift off the brake. This behavior catches people out in car parks and tight junctions. If you’ve been driving a manual for years, you may instinctively reach for the gear stick. You might also press a clutch that isn’t there. This can be surprisingly distracting in those first few miles.
A couple of hours with a qualified instructor in an automatic car make all the difference. You will drive on the actual roads around Bexhill, St Leonards, Battle, and the surrounding area. It means the transition is smooth rather than stressful, and you arrive at confident driving much faster.
What Does a Manual-to-Automatic Refresher Course Cover?
At Pro Coach, we start every refresher with a conversation about your goals and your driving history. For a manual-to-automatic switch, we’d typically focus on:
- Getting comfortable with the automatic gearbox-drive, neutral, park, and sport modes where applicable
- Understanding creep and how to manage low-speed manoeuvres without a clutch
- Brake feel and progressive braking in an automatic
- Managing speed on hills and dual carriageways without the gear control you’re used to
- Parking and manoeuvres in your own automatic vehicle if applicable
- Building overall confidence on local roads before driving independently
Most drivers switching from a manual to an automatic need no more than two to four hours. They soon feel genuinely comfortable. Some need just one session. We won’t recommend more hours than your situation actually calls for.
Can I Have the Lesson in My Own Automatic Car?
Yes, and in most cases this is exactly what we’d recommend. Learning in your own car helps you build familiarity with the vehicle you’ll use daily. You get used to the seat position, the visibility, and the feel of the brakes. If you’ve just purchased an automatic and it hasn’t arrived yet, we can use the school car. This will be for your first sessions. If you’d like to try an automatic first, we can start with the school car. Later, you can transition to your own vehicle.
What About Switching the Other Way-Automatic Licence to Full Manual?
This is a different situation entirely. If you passed your driving test in an automatic, your licence carries a restriction. You can only legally drive automatics. To drive a manual, you’d need to pass a further practical test in a manual car. The good news is that you don’t need another theory test. You also don’t need a new provisional licence. Your full automatic licence serves as your provisional for manual driving.
This process typically requires around 10 to 20 hours of tuition. This helps you get comfortable with clutch control and gear changes. Then, you need to book a standard practical test by phone through the DVSA.
