And how to avoid Them
At Pro Coach Driving School, one of the most common questions we hear is:
“Why do people fail their driving test?”
Understanding the mistakes listed below is a first step to avoid Driving Test failure.
The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) has published the top 10 reasons candidates fail.
1. Observation at Junctions
Failing to look properly before emerging is the number one cause. Always check mirrors and blind spots created by door pillars thoroughly. Door pillars can easily hide cyclists and motorcylists at ” T-Junctions.
2. Mirrors-Changing Direction
Not using mirrors effectively when changing lanes or turning can cost you dearly. Make mirror checks second nature. Moreover, act on what you see.
3. Control-Steering
Poor steering control, such as oversteering, understeering or drifting, shows lack of vehicle control.
4. Junctions-Turning Right
Misjudging gaps or failing to position correctly when turning right is a common error.
5. Move Off-Safely
Not checking blind spots before moving off is a serious fault.
6. Positioning-Normal Driving
Incorrect road positioning can confuse other drivers and create hazards.
7. Response to Signals-Traffic Lights
Failing to react correctly to traffic lights, especially amber, is a frequent mistake.
8. Move Of-Control
Rolling back on hills or poor clutch control can lead to faults.
9. Positioning-Lane Discipline
Straying from your lane or poor lane discipline at roundabouts is a major issue.
10. Response to Signs-Road Markings
Ignoring or misreading road markings can result in dangerous situations.
Tip: Practice these areas with your instructor and stay calm on test day. Awareness and preparation are key to avoid driving test failure.
